Plot Summary:
Nathan Detroit has run a floating crap game for years, however due to a recent crack down by Lt. Branigan he struggles to find a suitable location for his illegal game. The Biltmore Hotel garage is the only likely option, but they require a $1,000 security deposit, which Nathan does not have. Desperate to come up with the cash, Nathan and his gambler friends devise a plan to ask high roller Sky Masterson for the money. It is well known that Sky cannot say no to a bet, so rather than ask for a loan, Nathan and his friends struggle to come up with a bet to present to Sky that they cannot lose. Minutes into their meeting, Sky is not taking the bait. Sky announces that he is on his way to Havana and is not interested in any “sucker” bet Nathan has to offer. Determined not to fail, Nathan takes one last attempt at getting Sky to bet: Sky must convince a girl of Nathan’s choosing to accompany him to Havana. Sky agrees bragging that he can get any woman he wants to accompany him. Sky’s confidence is quickly dashed when Nathan chooses Sergeant Sarah Brown of the Save-A-Soul Mission.
Sarah and her foster father Arvide Abernathy have dedicated their lives to reforming sinners such as gamblers Nathan Detroit and Sky Masterson. However, so far they have failed to save a single sinner. Sky enters the mission posing as a reformed sinner, who would like to offer Sarah “one dozen genuine sinners,” if she will only accompany him to dinner. Sky fails to mention that dinner will be in Havana. Sarah agrees as her mission will be forced to close if she does not find souls to save.
Meanwhile, Nathan is busy preparing the crap game and trying to hide it from his fiancé of fourteen years Miss Adelaide. Adelaide is a show girl at a seedy night club, who’s frustration from Nathan’s refusal to set a wedding date is beginning to manifest itself into a physical illness. At Adelaide’s request, Nathan swore that he would quit running the crap game, but he hasn’t. A loud mouth show girl lets it slip that the game is on and Nathan must make a quick exit from Adelaide’s wrath.
The next day a group of gamblers gathers to hear the location of the game. Lt. Branigan arrives and becomes suspicious. Desperate for an explanation one of Nathan’s employees informs Lt. Branigan that the gathering will not be a crap game, but rather a surprise Bachelor party for Nathan Detroit. Adelaide over hears the news and is overjoyed at the prospect of getting married the next day. She rushes home to pack for Niagara Falls and tells Nathan she will meet him at the train station the next day.
Sarah and Sky fly to Havana and indulge in what Sky describes as a “Cuban milkshake.” Unaware that there is alcohol in the drink, reserved Sarah becomes intoxicated and even attempts to hit a woman who is making eyes at Sky. When a bar brawl ensues Sky and Sarah exit out the back door. Sky sees a side of Sarah he didn’t know existed begins to fall for her.
Back in New York, misunderstandings, miscommunications, and mixed messages make for a whirlwind of hilarity, for both couples and the colorful ensemble cast of sinners and saints. All of the problems get sorted out just in time, and in classic 1950’s musical style both of these love stories have a happy ending.
